The Gaming Giant Recruits Apex Legends Lead to Rescue Challenged Action Game Project Ethos
2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently working on the forthcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Management Transition Comes After Mixed Reception
Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster unveiling last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified employees about this strategic move through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a more defined direction.
The president stated that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a renewed approach, aiming to better meet player expectations.
A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment
This announcement mirrors a comparable move taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock development group.
Here is the full text from the president's memo:
Dear Team—
I know you all just wrapped up your gathering - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a note, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most driven and talented creators we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that relationship to continue.”
Given your hard work and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was enlightening. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had work to do. It revealed the need for a sharper vision.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the criticism to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s positioned to fulfill its ambition to our players.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS increases every day. To advance the remarkable development you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Lead of 31st Union. Following several months of talks, Ben starts with us on the specified date.
Ben’s leadership and background in the PVP shooter space is extensive, having spent the past decade and a half creating and managing some of the most well-known series in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in greeting him soon. We are all looking forward to persist witnessing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to ahead.
The President
Experience of the New Leader
The appointee currently holds the role of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously worked at major gaming companies in various production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had stints at other industry leaders.
Title Details and Concept
Project Ethos was unveiled in October 2024 together with a early access event. At the time, 31st Union presented the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting advancement on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch reads. "Take on the opponents with new abilities, challenges, and challenges that evolve every session. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Or go big, put it on the line, and trust your squad can secure victory? The choice is in your hands."
The game has not yet received an official launch window or consoles, but enthusiasts can expect more updates as creation progresses.
