The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
